Stop pursuing “Normal,” Be Eccentric Today! Choose to Build your Batmobile!

“Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.”
Bertrand Russell – English Logician and Philosopher 1872-1970

Eccentric is defined as someone who deviates markedly from an established norm, especially a person of odd or unconventional behavior.

I think the “weird” part is that being unique is considered abnormal! You have interests and avocations that make you unique; your personal history is unique, so what I don’t understand is why a world full of unique people all work so hard to be “normal”?

We have all been conditioned by each other to stay within certain limits. A lot of those are needed for a safe and well run society, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun being who you really want to be.

The world told me to “get an education, and get a good job, with benefits and security.” Well those are all great things, but how about getting a job I love to do that makes me excited to get up every morning? Even if it’s not the most secure job or the best paying, what if I follow my bliss and go into a line of work or pursue a hobby that makes no sense to anyone except me?

How much of your life are you going to try and stay invisible? How many more days will you do what you think others want you to do so you can be thought of as “normal?”

Your life clock is ticking, I suggest that it is not “normal” for you to spend another moment being normal. You need to pursue the positive things you desire – TODAY.

In 1986 I met Batman and Robin and sat in a TV style Batmobile. I wanted to meet the stars of one of my favorite shows, so I created a situation so others would work to bring them to me at no cost. Adam West and Burt Ward were great to meet, but it was the car that struck an inner nerve in me. I was young and had no money but I knew right then and there that I wanted to drive my own batmobile down Hollywood Blvd.

This weekend, 100 policemen will be stopping traffic so I can do just that!
I can drive my “Natemobile” any time I want. I even drove it across the country from Florida to California in the Fireball Run rally!

No, I didn’t have a genie grant my wish; I made a wild, audacious decision to do whatever it took to have my own working drivable batmobile. I know, I know, that’s just not normal.

But from the time I decided I wanted my own version of that famous car to today, lots of people have let me know they thought I was not normal. I was eccentric or a dreamer. “Normal” people don’t drive a batmobile! I was told many times to buy a “normal” car, or settle for something that was more reasonable, like a sports car. Guess what? I don’t want to be NORMAL! Do you?

I spent evenings creating custom parts.  I had a great time.  I did years of detective work, and collected photos for reference. I enjoyed every minute of it. I also shared my hobby with a few friends who rolled their eyes and thought it was not only impossible, but that “normal” people didn’t want that sort of car. They also told me all the reasons why I should give up my dream. How I couldn’t afford it, or I could never get it registered to drive on the street. They even told me that I can’t have a real flame shooting out the back of my car, bla, bla, bla. I stopped hanging out with those people.

Well guess what? I have had a blast being unique. Not because other people thought one way or the other, but because it was what I wanted to do! Now, I don’t drive my Natemobile to work everyday, that would just be crazy… LOL – so instead I drive my Knight Rider KITT car! It has air conditioning and is better in the rain. It’s also a lot of fun to drive as well! Famous movie and TV cars are just one of many eccentric things I enjoy. It’s not weird, it’s what I like. I followed my bliss, and I wouldn’t change a thing, nor do I regret any of the time I spent on this “fools errand.”

Today’s action item for you is to identify your unique interest or talent and make one move today towards fulfilling your inner desire. It must be something positive, something you can control, and something that does not injure or intrude on anyone else’s rights. Give yourself the gift of exploring that adventure or experience you have not allowed yourself to consider, because it was just too “out there.” From as simple as getting price quotes for that trip to help excavate a dinosaur, or calling about learning the trapeze, make that first decision today, to separate yourself from the lemmings around you, and take the path less traveled!

Oh yeah, as a follow up, a few people turned out to greet me at the Academy Award’s Kodak theater on Hollywood Blvd!

How To Release Your Inner Power Today!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

by Nate Truman

release your power “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~Marianne Williamson, a Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of “A Course in Miracles”

Read the above quote at least twice, and read it slowly, so you internalize each word and idea.

We all share a secret: we each know the “real” person that we are, but don’t dare show it to the world in all it’s glory. I don’t mean the deep dark secrets where we have fallen short, but the secret person we KNOW we could be: the amazingly loving, helpful, kind, brave talented person inside. We have each made sure that person doesn’t get out. We all know what happens to people who wear their hearts on their sleeves, or appear to care about others. So we protect our inner selves, we hide our kinder side, so we can be tough and withstand the insults and disappointments. We never fully commit to something, so we can say we didn’t really try.

What would happen if instead of spending so much time defending and protecting our lack of effort, we really let that inner amazing person take over? It just takes one decision. If you make one decision right now, to allow yourself to blossom and reach out to someone today, you start a whole new direction. Yes it has to be followed by one more decision in the same direction, but your life’s journey is a series of single steps.

Each decision to move toward a positive goal is a step in the right direction. Sure, you can always decide to step back, or stop walking and start complaining. However, any great goal, any huge life change is only accomplished by first making one  decision.

Make a list. Make a call. Push the plate away. The more decisions you make in a new direction, the easier they get. I know the first workout after months of inactivity is always harder to decide to do, than my 30th workout in a row. Reaching out to a friend or family member that you have not talked to in months or years the first time is much more difficult than a quick call to a constant pal.

So make that one decision today. Show the world your powerful inner self. Share your talents, help the helpless, have your best day of sales ever. Just one little decision after another, and before you know it, the world will see a whole new you!

The Ring of Results is the Only Way to Get Yourself to Take Action!

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

by Nate Truman

1187159_abstract_circle_shape

“You’ve got to be before you can do, and do before you can have.”
Zig Ziglar

Are you a failure in some aspect of your life? You just can’t lose weight and get in shape, or you can never get organized?  Do all of your relationships end in disaster?  Do you often think if you could just get a break, a small sucees, THEN you could turn things around?

Do you all ready know what you should be doing today, but tell yourself that you will start tomorrow, or right after the next cookie or after watching some TV?  Chances are you don’t need anything to turn these “failures” into successes except one thing.

The right BELIEF.   Think of something you are successful at every time, every day.

It can be as simple as driving to work.  When you get in your car, are you CERTAIN you are going to make it to your workplace?  I understand most people don’t think that getting to work is a success, but the reason you can do it without hesitation is that you BELIEVE you will be fine, even though logically you know there is always a risk.   Why is that?

I call it the Ring of Results.

You set a goal (get to work), you take action (you get in your car and go), you get results (you arrive safely again), which then reinforces your belief that you can successfully get to work every day.  Now I know there are people who have had car accidents, that don’t share that certainty that they will be able to do that, and can end up so afraid that they quit their job or get someone else to drive them.  So your beliefs are based on your results, good or bad.

The key to getting the ring of results rolling in the right direction towards your goals is to create the results you desire in your head first.   If you can see in your minds eye all ready achieving your goal, that will create in your subconscious a belief that you will be able to get there.  That belief will tap more of your potential and in turn will drive you to take more action.  That larger action will create positive results, which then strengthens your belief that you can achieve your goal!

Truly believing that you can achieve some result  before you achieve it  is the key to starting the ring of results rolling.  Once you convince your mind, your inner potential will be energized; you will take massive action because you want that result you absolutely KNOW you are going to achieve.  That action will start showing results, and those real results will strengthen your belief that you can achieve even more!

So start the ring rolling in the right direction by visualizing yourself  all ready having the results you want.  Picture it, focus on it, feel it in your soul that it has all ready happened. Unleash your mind from uncertainty, you have achieved your goal all ready.   Once you feel you have this image clearly in your mind, you will want to take massive action toward that goal, because the more you do, the faster you will fulfill your minds belief.  Start with certainty in your heart and mind, and you will create the future you envisioned for yourself!

LIFE’S ULTIMATE GOAL!

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

By Nate Truman

1091624_success_succeed_business_money_sign“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart.”
Helen Keller

Money, power, fame, sex.  Do you want these things?  I don’t believe you do.

You don’t want money or power; you want the security and freedom they allow you in life.

You don’t want fame or attention from the opposite sex; you want the confidence and pleasure you believe they would bring you.

So I will grant you all of your desires right now.  With or without money and power, you have the same level of  security that you will be alive tomorrow.  So you have as much security as the rich and powerful.  You have all the freedom you want, as you must choose how to spend your infinite now just like the richest and most powerful persons on the planet.   If anything, money and power rob you of  much of your freedom and time each day.  You are an amazing creation, unlike any other in the universe.  There is no reason for you to not be supremely secure in the understanding that you have a purpose to fulfill, and you have the freedom to pursue it with or without  riches or an exaulted postion.

Fame and beauty are so fleeting they often come and go, and leave the recipients more insecure than they were before.   So instead I give you the understanding that you can decide right this moment to be as confidant as you want to be.  Confidence is a decision.

You can get in touch with your inner beauty and share it with the world.   When she was alive, Mother Theresa in physical terms would not be  considered beautiful, but I dare you to look at photos of her and not see her inner beauty shining out of her eyes!

In your mind, was Helen Keller cursed or blessed by being born blind, deaf and “dumb?”  She understood that even a silent and dark world was filled with beauty that could not be seen or heard or touched.

You have a connection to the universe inside of your heart.  You must release yourself from striving after goals that, in the end, are no more than dissipating smoke. Then you can begin to identify those needs you truly have for enjoying this gift of life. Only then will you be pursuing  Life’s Ultimate  Goal.

HOW TO CHANGE ANY BAD HABIT – TODAY!

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

by Nate Truman

1151706_boy_sucking_fingers“All our talents increase in the using, and every faculty, both good and bad, strengthens by exercise.”

ANNE BRONTE, 1820-1849

PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT!
If you are not in the place where you think you should be, stop and think about what you have practiced. If you are in great physical shape, I know it is because of your eating and exercising practices. If your relationships are strong, loving and trusting, I know what you practiced when you were interacting with others. If your finances are all in order, you have little or no debt, and you have a plan for future adventures and expenses, I know the kinds of habits you practice. There is one little problem with practice though, the opposite is true as well.

Your daily time is limited, and each choice you make on how to spend each moment, sends you on a specific set of outcomes. A nap or some exercise? Spending 2 hours scanning the internet or 2 hours interacting with your loved ones? “Zoning out” to the radio on your drive home, or listening to a recorded motivational or educational book? It is the small consistent decisions that will, over time, send you on a whole new life path.

You know that if you want progress, you have to take action. Also, if you take massive action in one area, the other areas of your life have to be put on hold for a while. But just as a crash starvation diet does help you lose a few pounds fast, we all know it’s temporary. It’s the consistent healthy eating combined with regular exercise that is the real answer to staying in good over all shape.

Take a look at how you are spending your days, hour by hour. If you want to move in a new and better direction in one area of your life, identify a habit that is not helping you achieve your goals, and decide today to replace it with a better habit. Do NOT decide to workout for 4 hours, or run 30 miles. Go for a short walk. You have to break the mental habit, and that will take 3-6 weeks of regularly doing something new.

Choose only one habit to replace. I say “replace” not break, or stop, because with nothing to replace it, you will be back doing your old habit in a short time. You will have to consciously tell yourself “no, I am not doing that old habit, I am now doing this” for a few weeks. Each time you sucessfully do the new action, try and think of all the reasons why the new habit is what you want to do, and all of the positive things that will happen because you are taking action.
At some point you will just do the new habit, because it feels “right.”  You will just pull on your running shorts, or not even think to open your video game or turn on the TV, because you like the new you better, the one that is improving, instead of ignoring. Once you have successfully replaced the old habit, you can concentrate on intensifying and improving it.

If most of your life is about being a mom and serving your family’s needs, or keeping up with a demanding job, (or both!) don’t beat yourself up about the areas of your life that are not 100% how you want them. Fitness takes time and money, family takes time and money, survival takes time and money. There are seasons of our lives that shift the focus of our priorities. But no matter your situation, I am sure you can find a few small bad habits that are working against your true desires and direction, and then choose to actively shift them to a better alternative. Knowing you are taking a small step in the right direction will leave you in a much better place than guilt or self flaggilation ever will.
For long time success of reforming your life in all areas, slow and steady really does win the race!

HOW TO WRITE YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT

Monday, August 10th, 2009

by Nate Truman
894098_binoculars

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”  Anne Frank

A personal mission statement gives you clarity of purpose.  Most corporations have them, but unless they are the written down vision of a single person who started the company, they often become politically correct mumbo jumbo and that’s not what I am talking about here. You are going to create a short, clear sentence that defines who you are and who you want to be in the future.

To start you off, here are some short, clear examples of corporate statements.

3M – “To solve unsolved problems innovatively”
Mary Kay Cosmetics – “To give unlimited opportunity to women.”
Merck  – “To preserve and improve human life.”
Wal-Mart – “To give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people.”
Walt Disney – “To make people happy.”

Your mission should answer the following questions: Why are you here? What impact do you want to make when you get up every day?

You should also ponder your vision of your future, when composing your statement.  Where do you want to be in the future? 5 years, 10 years? Where do you see yourself at that time?  What changes can you see being made after years of your focus in a new direction?

The last item to include in your thinking is your values.  They are your rule book, so to make sure you don’t trample your core beliefs in your effort to move toward your vision, also keep those in front of you as you form your personal mission statement.

Then connect all three as a single message.  If you can make it as short as possible, it will be easier to keep in your head to redirect you when you wander off track during your day.   Don’t get stuck trying to write the “perfect” mission statement, it will change over your life’s journey.

I think you will find that spending just a few minutes on creating a “slogan” for your life, you will gain a new clarity of purpose that you didn’t have before.   If you have a favorite quote that resonates with all of these elements, use it as your personal statement, or change it so it calls you to action.

I have personalized a quote from Gandhi that keeps me more focused:

“I must be the change I want to see in the world.”

It calls me to action, it holds me accountable, and it applies in every aspect of my life.  Feel free to use it for yourself!  The quote from Anne Frank at the beginning has also been useful to me over the years.  It too keeps me focused on the positive change I can dedicate myself too and that I can start right now.

Currently my personal mission statements are the following:

Today I have been given the gift of life; I will open it, enjoy it, and treasure it.

The longer one is “Spend each infinite now as best I can to leave the world a better, happier, love filled place.”

Enjoy the process of defining your personal mission statement.  Once you refine it so that each time you read it, it has the effect of correcting your life’s heading with renewed vigor, you will have found your “magic” words to keep you living out your dream life.

WHY YOU SHOULD SET WORLD CHANGING GOALS!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

by Nate Truman

1208834_earth_2“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.”

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni

If you want to take command of your one and only time here on Earth, the most important step is to have a set of clear, written goals.  I have read over many sets of other people’s goals, and 95% of them are standard wants and desires for items or situations that most people would agree could be a goal of theirs.  Financial security, weight loss or increased fitness, career success, bigger and better homes, cars, and so on.   Personal improvement goals and security or luxury goals do point you in a direction of action that will have you end up in a better situation than when you started.

However, if you get out your list of written goals, and look at the long range goals, do they excite you into action?  Does the thought of eating small portions of egg whites and working out 3 hours a day to get to your “perfect” body fat percentage in 6 months bring a grin of anticipation to your face?  Or how about denying yourself any fun spending for 20 years so you can retire at some early age to then be able to do nothing all day and gloat about it to those still working?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for implementing self discipline to achieve personal goals like these.  But how many people have had the above goals on their lists, only to give them lip service, or occasional effort?  Why is that?  The answer is simple, it’s because the goals are self oriented, and ultimately not compelling.

Now if you had a “world changing goal” at the top of these same goals, it changes everything.   It is all about whom you are doing them for, and why, that will create constant an enthusiastic  action.

Let’s suppose that you have a motivation to change a wrong in this world, or create a solution to a problem or situation that would literally change lives if you achieved it, even partially?   What if you needed the stamina that only a healthy body could give you, to be able to pursue that goal?  What if you managed to contribute so much at your job, or create something, that the money would flow to you, allowing you to retire from your daily job, so you could devote all of your waking hours to helping even more?

From what I have read about Michelangelo, he was tireless, and always had more projects he wanted to achieve than he had time to do.  Bill Gates was tireless in dominating the computer world and the internet until that became too small of a goal for him, and now he’s tackling world problems.

Bill Gates solving problems on a world scale

As far as I know, neither Michelangelo, nor Bill Gates is known for their rock hard abs.  Bill does have a pretty big house, but it wasn’t his long term goal.  It was a result of solving problems, and creating new ideas.  Michelangelo had money problems at times in his life, but relaxing in a big comfortable home was not his drive.   He worked tirelessly to release as much of the art and imagination that was in his soul as he could each day.

I think Bill Gates is happier now, than when he was at the top of his game in the competitive world of computers.  Instead of his top goal of trying to dominate markets, his newer world changing goals are solving problems that help others.  He has always been driven to solve problems, but now his end goal, his driving force is motivated not by winning, or having the most money and stock, but by helping millions around the world live a healthier, more prosperous life.

When your over riding goal changes from looking good, and having things to impress others, to staying fit and using your things to help others, true happiness is achieved.   Abs and a mansion for you, or millions of healthy, better educated children because you lived?  Which of these goals would motivate you more?   In the end, which end result is truly more impressive?

I know, we don’t all have the talent of Michelangelo, or the resources of Mr. Gates.  But what if you modified your long term goals in your area of influence, to help one student? Support one great teacher with supplies, or started a movement to solve a problem in your town? Once you focus on how your contribution can help elevate and improve other people’s lives, you will change your part of the world, and leave a legacy that will bring you happiness.

A world goal will outlive you, in ways you can not even dream of.  So write out your true inner motivation for each goal on your list.  Next, cross off a few that are only motivated by self centered desires.  Lastly, create your first world changing goal right now, and take the first small step of action before the day is over.  The universe only has one “you” to do the good that only you are in position to do.

HOW TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE ANYONE!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

by Nate Truman
win friends and influence people

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29 NIV

From before Plato and Socrates, to Dale Carnegie and all the current experts on relationships, people have been trying to figure out how to “make” other people like them, and then be able to influence them. I think we all would agree that life is more enjoyable with good friends to share our lives with. And who wouldn’t enjoy having influence on others when they have a strong desire to have something go their way? Before you wear yourself out learning skills to manipulate others into liking you, I would suggest that you first memorize and then put into practice the above sentence.

I think any “life coach” or motivational speaker of any religion would agree that if you lived out this one idea in your professional and personal life you would have many close friends and have great influence when ever you wanted it.

The first statement is important. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths,” that is very clear. If you gossip about others at work, and people know that about you, others may think of you as a good source of “dirt” but I doubt they would also want you to be a close and trusted friend. How do you feel about the person who makes the rude, condescending, off color, or racist remark, or is known for always putting a curse word into every sentence? For whatever reason people do this, it’s not to win friends. It’s to put others down, and try and build themselves up. To win friends and influence people you would do well to live by choosing your words carefully and work to “rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.” Colossians 3:8

Secondly we are urged to speak “…only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs.” Not only should we aim to say helpful words, but we should choose words that build up the other person. And we can’t do that “according to their needs” unless we have listened to them, and understand their needs.

Lastly, it urges us to speak so “that it may benefit those who listen.” What is the benefit for the other person in what you are saying? If you have that thought in your head, you will come up with helpful, specific and kind words on a regular basis. Do you have a friend who does that for you? Someone who really listens to you and you can count on them to say encouraging words that are helpful and specific? Wouldn’t you like more of your co-workers and friends to speak that way when you are with them? I know I would!

Take the time right now to memorize or print out this one short statement, and start today to apply it each and every time you open your mouth to speak. You will find that the rewards for you will be “winning” more and better friends, and new increased influence when you have something to say!

HOW TO NEVER STOP DREAMING NEW DREAMS!

God Mind door dreams

“Dreams are renewable. No matter what our age or condition, there are still untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born.”

Dr. Dale E. Turner

Dreams are a visionary creation of your imagination. Your dreams are the first step to developing a strongly desired goal or purpose.  To live your life awake and aware, you must have a compelling dream to pull you towards your future.  Each of us has had periods of our lives where things were all on autopilot and we became like zombies just going through the paces of our day.   All of the clutter and distractions of daily survival keep us focused on the seemingly urgent but often unimportant tasks that drain much of our essence.

If you find yourself being drawn to play video games to shut off your mind, or working on crossword puzzles just to get them done, or eating without thinking, but not getting any real pleasure out of doing these activities, it is a sign that you need to regain your dreams.   These kinds of activities are ways your subconscious mind tries to keep you busy, in a primal survival mode.  Your “God mind” is not engaged.

Your “God mind” is that higher, immortal part of your consciousness where your dreams and purpose lives.

Take a moment right now to stop everything going on in your head and take a few deep breaths to clear your mind.  Now close your eyes and listen to the sound of your thoughts at rest.  Next, “look” around with your minds eye, and wander over to your dreams.

Dust off a few, and see if you can find one you can work on today. Maybe you will find a brand new one!   “See” yourself taking your dream with you, as you come back to reality.

Now with your shiny dream in your pocket, take a look at the rest of your day or week.  You should be able to find lots of to-do items that you no longer need or want to do, to free up time to pursue your new dream.   This is your life, don’t just survive today, thrive today!  At any age, no matter your circumstances, you can tap into your God mind for those “untapped possibilities within us and new beauty waiting to be born.”
